AD Replication

Hi Warriors,

I would like to write to you all about the AD replication .

AD Replication:

In Windows 2000 & 2003 the replication happens on a Multi Master Model with Loose Convergence.

1. All the domain controllers have equal rights to make modifications to the AD.
2. Since it supports Multi Master model - the Last writer wins.
3. The AD replication toplogy generator called KCC - Knowledge consistency checker takes care of intiating the replication as well.

Replication Within Sites
1. Uses a Change Notification as a Mechanism to transfer the data.
2. The replication data is not compressed.
3. Assumes the network link as a fast & reliable link.

Replication between Sites
1. Occurs only on a Manual Schedule
2. Replication data is compressed.
3. Assumes the link as Slow network link.

It is always best to monitor the amount of replication traffic.

How to measure?

1. Perfmance Monitor
2. Network Monitor
3. Event Viewer

Counters to add in Perf Mon

DRA Inbound Bytes Total.
DRA Inbound Bytes Not Compressed.
DRA Inbound Bytes Compressed (Before Compression).
DRA Inbound Bytes Compressed (After Compression).
DRA Outbound Bytes Total.
DRA Outbound Bytes Not Compressed.
DRA Outbound Bytes Compressed (Before Compression).
DRA Outbound Bytes Compressed (After Compression).

Any kinda discussion is welcomed.

Regards
Kasi VPS
